Clever design, but poor sound quality at high volume.

This speaker was extremely easy to pair with my phone, but the real benefit is the way that it seamlessly connects to other charge 5’s (I purchased two to try to get better projection and coverage). It’s a very clever feature and one of the main reasons that I purchased both before trying them out. I was expecting to be blown out of the water based on other reviews and my previous experience with JBL products. However, I definitely was not. Sound quality is quite good up to about 50% power, at which point the speaker starts to distort. For context, this is just about the same level that I get out of my Jawbone Jambox, which only sports a 2 driver. So, as previous reviewers have stated, it can get quite loud, but only if you don’t care about sound quality. I paired two of them and placed them next to my 4th generation Echo’s and was found that their clarity was on par but they had a noticeably poorer bass response than my $100 Amazon speakers which are pretty good at best. This was my biggest disappointment and, frankly, I regret performing the direct comparison. I have not submerged the speaker or exposed it to the elements, but the construction seems to be high quality. I personally don’t like exposed passive radiators, which seems like a gimmick that will decrease the lifespan when they inevitably get punctured. Similarly, the exposed charge port is unprotected from sand and corrosion from salt water. All in all, I think that they are worth the $129 sale price that I spent on them, if I think of them as battery-powered non-wifi tough Echo’s, rather than portable high-quality speakers. However, they are not worth $179 that they are going for in most places. They just don’t perform like a $180 speaker.

Purchased, shipped and in my hands in less than 24 hours. Very happy with the sound and battery life out of this thing and it’s tough nails. This is my 3rd JBL Bluetooth speaker and you just can’t go wrong with these guys. An excellent product all round.

Good mid and highs, bass is mediocre at best. Quality construction, eq available on app. Would buy again but wish it had a bit more boom.
